Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Nietzsche wrote most of his major works in the space of about ten years, often while sick, isolated, and barely published. He declared God dead, called for a revaluation of all values, and was widely misunderstood in his own lifetime and after. The Nazis claimed him. They were wrong. Nietzsche was no nationalist. He despised herd thinking in every form. His actual project was harder and stranger: to figure out how to create meaning in a world that no longer has a guaranteed source of it.
