Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941)
Tagore was a poet, novelist, painter, composer, philosopher, and educator. He wrote the national anthems of two countries. He won the Nobel Prize in 1913 and used the money to fund a school. His work resists the categories that Western thought finds comfortable. Gitanjali is devotional poetry that reads as philosophy. His novels examine freedom and tradition in a colonized India. He corresponded with Einstein about science and spirituality. He belongs to no single tradition, which is precisely the point.
