bell hooks (1952–2021)
Gloria Jean Watkins chose the pen name bell hooks, lowercase, because she wanted the ideas to matter more than the personality. She wrote over forty books about love, race, gender, and class with a directness that made academic theory feel like kitchen-table conversation. All About Love sold quietly for years before becoming a phenomenon. She believed that love and justice were inseparable, and that talking honestly about both was the beginning of freedom.
