James Baldwin (1924–1987)
Baldwin grew up in Harlem, the eldest of nine children, under a stepfather who was a preacher and a tyrant. He left for Paris at twenty-four because he was afraid he would die if he stayed in America. He came back. He always came back. His essays about race are the best ever written in English. His novels about love, both queer and otherwise, are devastating. He told the truth about America the way a doctor delivers a diagnosis: precisely, without cruelty, without letting anyone off the hook.
